How many fish can I put in my aquarium? It sounds like a question that should have a simple mathematical answer. For years, fishkeepers were told to allow roughly one inch of fish for every gallon of water. The problem is that fish are not interchangeable units. A small tetra, a chunky goldfish and a territorial cichlid can all be similar lengths while placing completely different demands on an aquarium.
Tank size matters, but so do adult fish size, body shape, filtration, waste production, swimming space, behaviour, oxygen levels and the species already living in the tank.
That is why the old “inch per gallon” rule can be useful as a rough warning sign, but it should never be treated as a reliable stocking formula.
